A Reborn Doll starts off as a vynl toy doll, an artist will take that basic doll and make it look realistic, this process is known as reborning.

The basic process of reborning is as follows:

The artist will first take the doll apart and remove any paint added at the factory when is was made.  Alternatively you can purchase a doll kit that is ready for reborning, and is specifically made for this process.

The inside of the doll is then painted to give an undertone affect to the dolls skin, this is done by applying a blue or purple paint, however this can sometimes lead to the doll looking bruised.

Next the outer layer of the doll is painted to create a realistic looking skin, this is done in layers to achieve a look of blotches, veins, all of which add to the realism.

The artist can then add hair and eyelashes to the doll, this is a time consuming task as each hair is added individually and is often real human hair.

Finally the doll is weighted to the same weight a newly born baby so that not only does it have the look of a baby but also the feel.

In addition the above mechanical enhancements can be added to make the doll look like it is breathing or sleeping.  Magnets can also be added so that the doll can hold a dummy or hair clip.
